What is a Dental Bridge?

                             

Dental Bridging is a dental treatment to replace one or more missing teeth in your mouth, whereby an artificial tooth is fixed permanently to adjoining teeth which are crowned.  It is a similar procedure as doing a dental crown. The adjoining teeth are prepared to receive crowns.   The Kemah Family Dental, TX  which is suitably located near League City, Bacliff, Seabrook, Dickinson, and La Porte,  is the  low cost dental office by me.

Traditional fixed bridge

The most common type of bridge, including two or more crowns and a false or filler tooth (pontic).

Cantilever bridge

Less commonly used, this type of bridge is implemented when the missing tooth abuts next to a tooth only on one side and is attached to just one crown. It should not be placed in the back of the mouth because it can put too much force on other teeth, potentially causing damage.

First Visit:

Preparing the abutment teeth

The first dental appointment involves preparing the abutment teeth for the crowns that will hold the bridge in place. Some of the enamel (the outside layer of the teeth) will be removed so that there is room for the crown to be placed over them.

Impression of teeth

Using a soft putty-like material that the patient bites into, an impression of the teeth will be taken by leaving an indentation of the exact outline of the teeth. Next, a plaster-like material is poured into the impressions to make a model of the teeth—in which the bridge will be made in a dental lab. A temporary bridge will be placed over the abutment teeth to protect them until the permanent crown is constructed by the dental lab.

Second Visit:

Fitting of permanent crowns

During this visit, the temporary crowns will be removed, and the permanent crowns will be checked for proper fitting. The permanent bridges will then be cemented in place using a strong, permanent type of cement. Your dentist will check the crowns to ensure that your bite is not too high and adjust it accordingly.

Good oral hygiene is important or else, the bridge may lose its support if the adjoining tooth and gums are damaged by disease.

For missing teeth, we will usually look at the bite, space remaining and cosmetic requirement before deciding on the treatment plan. The estimated cost required for the procedures will be discussed with the client before embarking on the treatment.
